Meals & Packed Lunches

At Little Lion Cubs Nursery, we promote healthy eating in line with the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage Food & Nutrition Guidance (September 2025). We provide nutritious snacks and drinks throughout the day. Parents are welcome to provide a packed lunch for their child. All packed lunches must follow our Healthy Packed Lunch Guidance, ensuring that food is safe, balanced and nutritious for children under 5. To support families, we provide clear examples and advice on suitable packed lunch choices. We are unable to reheat food, and ask that parents avoid items such as sweets, fizzy drinks, chocolate bars, cakes, nuts and any foods that pose a choking hazard. Our aim is to work in partnership with parents to give children the very best start with healthy eating habit

Payments, Registration & Deposits

When your child joins us, there is a non-refundable registration fee of £75 to secure their place. In addition to this, we require a deposit equal to half a month's fees, which will be deducted from your final invoice when your child leaves — provided a full six weeks' written notice is given and all fees are paid and up to date. Invoices are sent out on the first of each month with fees being paid monthly in advance on the second of each month.

Government Funding & How It's Applied

Support Through Universal Credit

If you're receiving Universal Credit, you may be eligible to claim back up to:

85%
of your childcare costs
£1,014
per month for one child
£1,739
per month for two or more children

Although Universal Credit payments go directly to you, many families use this support to help cover nursery fees.

You can still choose to enrol your child at Little Lion Cubs Nursery and pay using the support received through your Universal Credit claim.

Please note: You cannot claim Universal Credit and use Tax-Free Childcare at the same time — you'll need to choose the scheme that works best for your family.

Tax-Free Childcare

Tax-Free Childcare is a government scheme that gives eligible working families up to £2,000 per child per year, or £4,000 if your child has a disability.

For every £8 you contribute, the government adds an extra £2 — giving you a 20% boost towards your childcare fees.

Am I Eligible?

You may qualify for Tax-Free Childcare if:

  • You (and your partner, if applicable) are working and each earning at least the equivalent of 16 hours at minimum wage per week
  • You earn less than £100,000 per year, per parent
  • Your child is under 12, or under 17 if they have a disability
  • You are not currently claiming Universal Credit, Tax Credits, or using Childcare Vouchers

Self-employed? On maternity, sick, or parental leave? You may still qualify.

You'll need to reconfirm your eligibility every 3 months, but it only takes a few minutes online.

Funded Childcare for Working Families

We know that childcare can be one of the biggest expenses for families — that's why we're committed to supporting you with access to the government's funded hours.

From September 2025, eligible working parents will be entitled to up to 30 hours of funded childcare per week for children from 9 months old and up — part of a new phased rollout designed to help working families from the earliest stages.

Jan 2026

Funded Hours at Little Lion Cubs

We're pleased to share that Little Lion Cubs Nursery will begin offering funded hours from January 2026.

Dec 2025

Apply by 31st December

To receive funded childcare from January, parents must apply for their eligibility code before 31st December 2025.

Once your application is approved, you'll receive a code that you'll need to share with us to secure your funded place for the term ahead.

How Funded Hours Work With Us

All children aged 3 and 4 are entitled to 15 hours of funded childcare per week for 38 weeks each year (which can be stretched across the year as 11 hours per week) regardless of income or working status (available at our Nursery from January 2026 — until then sessions will be charged at our daily rate).

  • If your child is eligible for government-funded hours, these can be stretched across the year to suit your booking pattern.
  • 30 hours of funding can be stretched over the year as 22 funded hours per week.
  • Funded hours are applied to your bill first.
  • Any additional hours used beyond the funding allowance will be charged at our standard hourly rate.
  • For children who aren't eligible for government funding, all sessions will be charged at our full hourly rate.

We're here to help you every step of the way — whether you're already with us or planning to join. If you'd like support understanding how it all works or need help applying, just get in touch.

Need Help Choosing the Right Option?

Whether you're applying for Tax-Free Childcare, planning ahead for Funded Hours in 2026, or exploring Universal Credit support — we're here to help.

Remember: If you'd like to use funded hours for January 2026, you'll need to apply by 31st December 2025 to receive your eligibility code.

All nursery spaces are subject to availability and we will only have a limited number of government-funded-only places at our setting which will fill up very quickly, so we recommend you to speak with the Nursery Manager to discuss which options are currently open to you and place your enquiry for a personal tour as early as possible, to ensure you get the sessions and start date you require.
